How Can I Close a Gap Between My Teeth without Braces?

1 %2849%29

Gaps between teeth are a common cosmetic concern that cause many of our patients to feel self-conscious about their smiles. For those who are hesitant to invest the time required for orthodontics, Dr. Kevin Sands offers cosmetic bonding, which can close most gaps between teeth without the need for braces. For this procedure, Dr Sands utilizes state-of-the-art, composite resin material to artfully widen and reshape the teeth to reduce gaps. The bonding material can be precisely matched to the exact shade of your teeth so that the enhancements blend seamlessly with your smile. Patients are generally very pleased with their cosmetic bonding results and often express a renewed sense of self-confidence after the procedure.

The cosmetic bonding process is quick and pricing is relatively economical when compared with other options such as porcelain veneers or Invisalign®. However, the results of cosmetic bonding are not typically as resilient or long-lasting as those achieved with porcelain veneers or orthodontics. Bonding commonly has a lifespan of about five to ten years, depending on the materials used, maintenance, and other factors. Replacing existing bonding that no longer has an optimal appearance is also a fairly simple, cost-effective process that can produce transformative results.

If you are considering cosmetic bonding to close the gap between your teeth, we encourage you to contact our office and schedule a consultation with Dr. Sands to explore your options. He will perform a full evaluation of your teeth and outline the various treatment plans he can use to improve your smile.

How Much Does a Gum Lift Cost?

2 %2837%29

A gum lift can provide many benefits: eliminating excess gum tissue, lengthening the appearance of the teeth, and improving the balance of your smile. If you feel self-conscious about the amount of gum tissue visible when you smile or laugh, you may be a good candidate for a gum lift. By recontouring the gums, Dr. Kevin Sands can effectively renew the gum line and enhance the appearance of your smile.

The cost of a gum lift varies from patient to patient since each person’s needs are unique. Factors such as the amount of excess gum tissue, the complexity of the procedure, the projected duration of the treatment, and the experience of your cosmetic dentist can all impact the final price of gum recontouring. If you are having a gum lift performed as part of a smile makeover, the cost of the procedure may also be affected. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Sands will perform an oral examination, determine whether you are a good candidate for a gum lift, and create a customized treatment plan. A member of our team will then be able to provide you with a cost estimate for the entire procedure.

How Can I Fix a “Gummy” Smile?

1 %2843%29

Some individuals have an excess of gum tissue that shortens the appearance of their teeth. This condition, frequently referred to as a “gummy” smile, is very common and can ultimately be the source of extreme self-consciousness. Fortunately, there is an advanced treatment available at our practice that can restore balance and harmony to your smile: it’s called a gum lift.

Dr. Kevin Sands often uses the gum lift procedure to reshape the gums and alter the gum line, lengthening the appearance of the teeth and improving overall balance and symmetry. Since a gum lift is performed with a state-of-the-art laser, the procedure is often virtually painless. Laser gum lifting can also usually be completed within one hour, and involves very little recovery time. Some patients choose to incorporate a gum lift into a full smile makeover for a more comprehensive smile rejuvenation.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

5

Porcelain veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures for improving common tooth imperfections. With the ability to cover and conceal gaps, cracks, chips, and mild tooth misalignment, dental veneers have provided many patients with a more youthful and natural-looking smile. With that in mind, how long can one expect the many benefits of porcelain veneers to last?

While there are many different types of dental veneers, porcelain veneers are considered quite durable. Though some types of dental veneers, such as composite resin veneers, may be less expensive up front, these veneers tend not to last as long. Conversely, porcelain veneers are constructed from a high-quality ceramic that can improve the appearance of your teeth for decades to come when properly cared for. During the consultation process, Dr. Kevin Sands will review the types of veneers he offers, examine your teeth, and advise you on which style of dental veneers can best meet your goals. For example, Zirconia veneers – which are stronger than traditional porcelain veneers – can be used for patients with severely damaged teeth, particularly when they are located toward the back of the mouth.

In addition to the nature of your tooth imperfections and the severity of the damage, Dr. Sands will also ask you questions about your lifestyle to help ensure that dental veneers are the best choice for you. For example, individuals who regularly engage in contact sports may not be ideal candidates for dental veneers, as the likelihood of impact increases the risk of damage to the restoration. For these patients, an alternative tooth restoration, such as a dental crown, may be more appropriate.

Regardless of which type of veneers you choose, Dr. Sands will give you detailed care instructions so your tooth restorations can last as long as possible. If you would like to learn more about our dental veneers options, please contact our office today.

What’s the Difference Between Lumineers® and Veneers?

sandsveneersDental veneers can rejuvenate your smile by covering and concealing a wide array of cosmetic concerns. Whether you have cracks, chips, stains, gaps, or mild tooth misalignment, Dr. Kevin Sands offers a variety of dental veneer options that can give you a more vibrant and youthful smile. Since there are so many types of veneers to choose from, Dr. Sands uses the initial consultation process as a time to help you explore your options and make a well-informed decision.

For example, porcelain veneers and Lumineers® seem very similar, but there are a few key differences:

Porcelain Veneers: Standard porcelain veneers are a durable tooth restoration that can conceal tooth imperfections while simultaneously giving you a natural-looking smile. Composed of a high-quality ceramic and hand-layered porcelain, each veneer is custom-made to match the shape and shade of the surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers often require only minimal preparation for the tooth so that the majority of your tooth’s natural structure can be preserved.

Lumineers®: A Lumineer® is a particular brand of porcelain veneer that has a couple of unique advantages. With all the same benefits as standard porcelain veneers, Lumineers® often require zero tooth preparation, preserving the entirety of your natural tooth. In addition, Lumineers® are composed of Cerinate® ceramic, which is an even thinner material that can eliminate the need for drilling or injections – all without compromising the durability of your restoration.

Is Teeth Whitening or Porcelain Veneer Treatment Better for My Goals?

dental smiles

If you are looking for options that can give your teeth a whiter, fresher appearance, teeth whitening and porcelain veneer treatments are some of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures available to accomplish those goals. However, they are very different techniques and one may be better than the other, depending on your unique needs.

Teeth whitening offers a minimally-invasive way to lighten your teeth by several shades, addressing yellowing and discoloration that can build on the teeth over time. This procedure can give the teeth a beautifully whiter appearance and provide you with a wonderful new reason to smile. With that in mind, professional teeth whitening treatments are not often very beneficial for teeth that are affected by deep stains, and the results – while potentially long-lasting with the proper care – are not permanent.

Porcelain veneers can address more severe signs of staining and discoloration with results that can last for decades. They can also improve the appearance of other common dental imperfections, such as gaps, chips, and even mild cases of misalignment. Porcelain veneers are customized dental restorations designed to mask the visible part of affected teeth. They have the ability to completely restore the appearance of your smile and give your teeth a much whiter, healthier appearance. That said, porcelain veneer procedures are more invasive than teeth whitening, and may require the original tooth to be slightly reshaped in order to provide the most natural fit and appearance for the veneer.

How to Prepare for Teeth Whitening if You Have Sensitive Teeth

sensitivitySome patients, particularly those who already have sensitive teeth, express concern about experiencing discomfort after an in-office teeth whitening treatment. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the potential for significant tooth sensitivity following a professional teeth bleaching procedure.

If you already know you have sensitive teeth, it’s a good idea to use oral hygiene products that are specifically made to lessen the risk of pain from tooth sensitivity prior to your teeth whitening procedure. Also, be sure to clean your teeth and gums with a soft-bristled brush and make soft circles during the process. Brushing too hard may increase the likelihood of irritation from the chemicals present in the bleaching solution.

Since bleaching agents often contain peroxide to give the teeth a whiter appearance, the chemical may inflame nerves in the teeth, which can cause a temporary uncomfortable reaction to cold temperatures. By following Dr. Kevin Sands’ directions, using appropriate oral hygiene products, and limiting your intake of excessively hot or cold food and beverages immediately after treatment, discomfort can often be greatly minimized. Over-the-counter pain medication can also help reduce any pain after the procedure. If you are using an at-home whitening product and are experiencing significant discomfort, it may be best to reduce the frequency of its use – and you should always consult your dentist on best practices for at-home teeth whitening treatments.

How Long does Teeth Whitening Last?

teeth-whiteningProfessional teeth whitening treatments are known for their long-lasting results, particularly in comparison to over-the-counter whitening options. Here at the practice of Dr. Kevin Sands, we offer Zoom!® Teeth Whitening, one of the most popular in-office treatment techniques available. In many cases, the results of teeth whitening at our practice can last from six months to two years. Some patients have even experienced the benefits of teeth whitening for even longer periods.

One of the keys to extending the results of the procedure is to maintain proper care of your teeth. Avoiding an excess of coffee, red wine, tea can be very helpful to reduce the chance of significant yellowing and discoloration. Additionally, foods such as blackberries and blueberries can stain the teeth, and too much of them can diminish the effects of teeth whitening at a faster rate. Quitting smoking can also go a long way toward keeping your teeth looking whiter for a longer time after professional teeth whitening treatment. Plus, occasional touch-up teeth whitening treatments can keep the effects going for years.
